Skyline and World Heritage, oceans and locks: experience the two faces of Panama.
Casco Viejo: World Heritage Site
Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is the historic district of Panama City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fascinating quarter combines a rich history with colonial and neoclassical architecture and is known for its charming cobbled streets, colourful buildings and historic squares. Sights include Panama Cathedral, Plaza de la Independencia and the Teatro Nacional. Stroll through the narrow lanes, admire the historic buildings and try the local food: a place you shouldn’t miss when visiting Panama City.
Agua Clara Locks
The Agua Clara Locks are one of the Panama Canal’s lock complexes and are located near Colón. They opened in 2016 and are part of the canal expansion that allows larger ships, known as Neopanamax vessels, to pass through. From the visitor centre you have an impressive view of the locks and can watch the locking process up close. Informative exhibitions and films explain how the canal works and why the expansion matters: a technological masterpiece and an impressive example of engineering.
